Philip can only cope with life by calling for ‘remote access’, where a technician in a call centre takes control of his actions and emotions until he feels stable again. He is grateful for this service, but he can no longer afford the premium subscription and he’s worried about what will happen once he’s cut loose.

​

This is my second year directing a piece for the festival of Science Fiction Theatre, hosted by Horatio Productions.

Wimbledon College of Arts

Working primarily as a playwright, I created a text called Dr Barnum's Jungle Museum of Molar Dreams to accompany A Soul Twirler Booms Trout Wet by the artist Paul Westcombe. 

​

Although my text intended to be read, there is also a recording almost like an audio book. The idea is for the audience to experience Paul's artwork along with my text and make a journey of meaning for themselves.

Two people don’t have sex. This is a surprise, because the play is about an escort. Elliot, a person in their 50s, hires a young male escort, Ace. The play tells the story of how the evening unfolds comparing the different timelines if Elliot is a man or a woman. It’s a sensitive portrayal of how taboo the sex trade still is, as well as how difficult society finds it to cope with the fact that older people still have a sexuality.

Set in the late 1920s, black and white films are becoming colour films and sound is making its first appearance. The whole world of film making was changing. No-one really knew whether this weird fad of ‘movies with sound’ would actually catch on, so some studios frantically kitted themselves out with new equipment and others carried on making silent, black and white films.

In the 1600s, Nell Gwyn rose from the gutter to become one of the first women ever to act on the English stage. Her beauty and popularity allowed her to become one of Charles II’s prostitutes. This play tells the story of how Nell and her fictional maid Margery cope with the slow death of Charles II. His death is so significant to them because the lot of women in the Seventeenth Century was inextricably bound with the men they depend on.

This play was inspired by Théodore Géricault’s famous 1819 painting, The Raft of the Medusa. When the Medusa frigate ran aground on a sand bank, there were not enough life rafts. 147 people were crammed onto a rickety, cobbled together raft and left to fend for themselves. 13 days later, only 15 survivors were rescued. Raft of the Medusa tries to understand the unimaginable conditions they experienced, as well as why they were mercilessly abandoned to such a cruel fate.

A woman loses who she is as dementia slowly destroys her brain. What could be more terrifying than knowing that all the things which make you who you are are slowly eroding? But in a way, the more that gets lost, the less you know that anything has been lost at all. So the question is, is it harder for the person suffering from the disease, or the person who loves and cares for them?

Oedipus is possibly the first thriller. He’s searching for a murderer who turns out to be him. The story is so well known today that the twist is no longer unexpected, but imagine that you don’t know the ending. This adaptation was developed for a physical theatre group, which allowed for exciting characterisations and large crowd scenes.

A couple of aristocratic families are getting ready for their annual holiday trip. There is frantic preparation, spurned love and all sorts of antics which the poor servants have to clean up after. Which just goes to show, it’s the servants who run everything anyway.
